A tongue shield is used in cases where a patient has a strong tongue-thrust habit or thumb-sucking habit, which may cause an open bite (upper front teeth do not meet the lower front teeth when biting).The tongue shield will help assist the patient in retraining his or her tongue when swallowing or preventing the patient from comfortably sucking a thumb. It can be a removable or a fixed appliance.
